The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed an attack on Awuma community by suspected armed bandits.
Awuma village is located approximately 13 kilometers outside Lafia, the state capital.
Confirming the attack, the state police command said preliminary reports indicated that assailants stormed the community Wednesday night, shooting indiscriminately.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP, the command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, said one person lost his life while three residents sustained gunshot injuries during the assault. He added that two of the injured are currently responding to medical treatment.
Nansel also confirmed that one resident was abducted and taken to an unknown destination.
“Investigation into the case has since begun with the aim of rescuing the abducted victim and arresting the perpetrators,” he said.
“At this time, findings have not indicated robbery of POS operators as reported in some quarters, but all angles are being investigated,” he explained.
The command urged residents of Awuma and surrounding communities to remain calm but vigilant.
“We are working with other security agencies to strengthen patrols around Lafia and its outskirts to prevent further incidents,” Nansel said.
“Anyone with credible information that can aid the investigation or the safe rescue of the abducted resident should contact the nearest police station or call the command’s emergency lines,” he urged.
