South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has attributed his side’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to lapses in tactical composure and costly individual errors.

Bafana Bafana began their Group A campaign with a disappointing loss to the co-hosts at a packed Estadio Azteca, where goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured all three points for the hosts.

The match was further complicated for South Africa after Sphephelo Sithole and captain Themba Zwane were both shown straight red cards, reducing the visitors to nine men. Mexico also finished the game with 10 men after César Montes was sent off in stoppage time.

Despite the defeat, Broos felt his side competed well for long periods and caused problems for the Mexican team.

“When the first goal came, I don’t think I need to say much about it,” Broos said after the match.

“But for the second goal, the Mexican player brought my player down. That happens, but the referee saw it differently.

“It is a pity that we had to finish the game with nine players.”

The Belgian coach insisted that his team had shown encouraging signs but admitted they paid a heavy price for losing possession in dangerous areas.

“I think my team played a good game,” he added. “There were moments when we were fully in the match, and Mexico were even desperate because they could not find spaces.

“Everything was good, but one thing we still have to improve is how we keep possession of the ball.

“In the first 20 minutes Mexico put us under a lot of pressure, and we were punished for two mistakes. We lost the ball in situations where we simply should not have done so, and they made us pay.”

South Africa will now look to bounce back in their next Group A fixture as they seek to revive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
