Nigeria’s transition toward cleaner and more reliable energy solutions received a major boost on Wednesday, June 10, as leaders from the energy, finance and government sectors gathered in Lagos for the inaugural Nigeria Solar Generator Day.
The event, co-hosted by the international clean energy initiative ZE-Gen, the global off-grid solar association GOGLA, and the quality assurance organisation, VeraSol, brought together solar energy companies, investors, policymakers, and development partners to explore opportunities to expand solar generator adoption across Nigeria.
The gathering comes at a critical time for Nigeria, one of the world’s largest generator-dependent countries, where more than 86 million people still lack access to electricity, and millions of households and businesses rely heavily on petrol and diesel generators for daily power needs.
Participants at the event are to examine the growing market opportunity for solar generators, discuss investment pathways, review technological advancements and explore policy frameworks needed to accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions nationwide.
Programme director of ZE-Gen, Lily Beadle, said Nigeria is reaching a pivotal moment in its clean energy transition.
“ZEGen is helping to turn innovation into real-world deployment in Nigeria by combining research, technology innovation and partnerships to build a scalable market for solar generator solutions in place of polluting fossil fuel generators,” Beadle said.
Beadle noted that increased investment, philanthropic support and collaboration among stakeholders would be necessary to rapidly expand access to clean and reliable power.
GOGLA’s Nigeria country representative, Sarah Odumwegu-Ojukwu, described Nigeria as one of Africa’s most dynamic energy markets, where consumers are actively searching for affordable alternatives to diesel-powered electricity generation.
“Solar generators are that alternative — and the opportunity is enormous,” she said. “Nigeria’s first Solar Generator Day will spotlight their investment and impact potential, and drive alignment on quality standards, policy, and the future of Nigerian energy.”
The event would also focus on ensuring product quality and consumer confidence as the solar market continues to expand.
According to Ruth Kimani of VeraSol, maintaining high standards will be essential to attracting both customers and investors.
“As the solar generator market in Nigeria expands, ensuring product quality and performance will be critical to building confidence among customers and investors,” Kimani said. Adding that VeraSol provides the data and verification tools needed to assess system performance and durability, helping to reduce investment risks and support market growth.
A recent report by ZE-Gen titled “Understanding Nigeria’s Fossil Fuel Generator Challenge” highlighted the scale of the country’s dependence on self-generated power. The report estimates that approximately 41 million small businesses and 17 million households use petrol and diesel generators, spending an estimated $8 billion annually on fuel.
The study further found that standard solar generator systems could meet up to 85 per cent of the typical energy demand of many users, while eliminating fuel costs and reducing exposure to fuel price fluctuations.
Discussions at Nigeria Solar Generator Day would cover financing models, quality standards, data frameworks and market development strategies. Organisers said insights from the event will contribute to the development of technical guidance and shared approaches to scale high-quality solar energy systems across the country.
ZE-Gen, launched during the COP27 climate conference, is an international initiative led by the Carbon Trust and Innovate UK. The programme seeks to accelerate the replacement of fossil-fuel generators with renewable energy alternatives across sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Indo-Pacific region.
Current ZE-Gen projects in Nigeria include pilot deployments of advanced energy storage technologies, thermal battery trials at Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, battery-enabled pay-per-use energy services, and the development of solar generator systems tailored for commercial and productive use.
