2026 World Cup: Aboutrika Slams Broos For Tactical Cowardice Against Mexico

Egyptian football icon Mohamed Aboutrika did not hold back in his criticism of South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, following Bafana Bafana’s limp 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their 2026 World Cup Group A opener at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

The match, marred by three red cards—two shown to South Africa and one to the hosts—saw the African side struggle to impose themselves from the first whistle.

But for Aboutrika, the result was decided long before the dismissals. In his post-match analysis on BeiN Sports, the former Pharaohs playmaker laid the blame squarely at Broos’ feet, accusing the Belgian tactician of coaching out of fear.

“He was petrified. It’s the opening game, and he was terrified,” Aboutrika said.

“He set up far too defensively, and the moment I saw that starting eleven, I knew they would lose. The responsibility lies with the coach. That was a catastrophic performance.”

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations winner went on to express his dismay as an African football fan, insisting that South Africa possess the quality to compete far better than they showed.

“I am shocked, truly shocked, because this squad has the talent to play so much better. Mexico are nothing special,” he added.

With the loss, Bafana Bafana now face an uphill battle to reach the knockout stage. They must bounce back in upcoming group matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea to keep their hopes alive.

In the other Group A clash, South Korea secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, moving to the top of the standings.
