Former President Goodluck Jonathan has praised former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, for what he described as uncommon courage and selflessness in rejecting the temptation to remain in power and instead guiding Nigeria back to democratic rule.
Jonathan spoke on Saturday at the public presentation of three books in honour of Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said Abdulsalami’s decision to oversee a peaceful transition to civilian rule restored stability and renewed hope in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“At a defining moment in our nation’s history, he demonstrated uncommon courage and selflessness by guiding Nigeria through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance and renewed hope in the future of our country,” Jonathan said.
The former president added that Abdulsalami’s legacy stands out because he resisted pressures to extend military rule despite commanding strong influence within the armed forces.
“If there is anybody that we can give credit to who has stabilised democracy in Nigeria today, it is General Abdulsalami Abubakar,” he said.
Jonathan noted that Abdulsalami’s leadership reflected rare patriotism, saying it took exceptional commitment to national interest for a military leader in such a position to willingly relinquish power.
He also commended Abdulsalami’s continued role in peacebuilding and national unity through the National Peace Committee, describing him as a consistent advocate of dialogue, reconciliation and democratic stability.
According to him, Abdulsalami has remained active in conflict resolution efforts within Nigeria and across Africa even after leaving office.
Jonathan said the three books unveiled at the event would help preserve the former Head of State’s legacy and provide guidance for future generations on leadership and nation-building.
He congratulated Abdulsalami on his 84th birthday and prayed for his continued good health and service to humanity.
