NDF Faults Oshiomhole On Claims Against Akpabio, NNPCL

The Northern Democratic Front (NDF) has faulted recent allegations made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole against officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the claims as reckless, unsubstantiated and defamatory.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja to journalists by its national publicity decretary, Comrade Abdullahi Suleiman, the group accused the former Edo State governor of making serious allegations in a recent media interview without presenting evidence to support them.

The NDF specifically took exception to Oshiomhole’s reported characterisation of NNPCL employees as thieves, arguing that such sweeping allegations were unfair to workers of the nation’s oil company and could undermine public confidence in the institution.

According to the group, any credible evidence of corruption or misconduct should be forwarded to relevant anti-graft agencies for investigation rather than being prosecuted in the media.

The organisation also questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest warrant reportedly issued by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts against former NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Malam Mele Kyari.

It argued that the development raised concerns about adherence to due process and parliamentary procedures, particularly because the action allegedly emanated from a committee member rather than the committee chairman.

The NDF further rejected claims allegedly made by Oshiomhole, suggesting that Senate President Akpabio was pursuing personal interests or attempting to undermine potential contenders ahead of a future Senate leadership contest.

Describing the allegations as baseless, the group maintained that Akpabio has continued to perform his duties in accordance with Senate rules and democratic principles.

The group also dismissed allegations that the Senate President facilitated the employment of one of his daughters at NNPCL, describing the claim as false and malicious.

It insisted that none of Akpabio’s daughters works for the national oil company and challenged Oshiomhole to provide evidence to substantiate the allegation.

The NDF further suggested that the senator’s recent criticisms of the Senate President may be linked to his perceived ambition to succeed the Senate President.

While acknowledging that political ambition is a legitimate aspect of democratic politics, the group warned against what it termed attempts to attain leadership through blackmail, misinformation, or personal attacks.

The organisation called on Oshiomhole to retract the allegation concerning Akpabio’s daughter, provide evidence for his claims against NNPCL staff, and pursue his political aspirations within the bounds of democratic engagement and institutional respect.

“The Northern Democratic Front stands for truth, accountability, and responsible political conduct. We will continue to defend the integrity of our national institutions and the reputation of leaders who serve with honour,” the statement said.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance and expressed support for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other constitutional institutions.
