ASUU Condemns Alleged Illegal Review Of KUST Governing Document

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil branch, has rejected the newly reviewed governing document of the institution, describing its approval and planned implementation as illegal.

The union, in a communiqué issued on Monday after its congress meeting, accused the university administration of attempting to impose the document on members without following due process as stipulated by the KUST Amendment Law 2017.

The communiqué signed by the branch Chairman and Secretary, Dr Aliyu Yusuf Ahmad and Dr Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur, directed members to abstain from recognising or using the documents until the matter is resolved.

The union also sought the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU for active non-compliance with the reviewed document, alongside other unresolved demands of the branch.

ASUU said it had consistently demonstrated a commitment to industrial harmony and academic stability at the university, noting that the Kano State Government’s efforts to improve staff welfare and strengthen higher education had supported peaceful relations.

The union, however, expressed concern about what it described as the university administration’s attempt to enforce documents it deemed “harmful and injurious” to the institution’s development.

According to the communiqué, the documents were approved without adequate engagement with relevant stakeholders and without adherence to the amendment procedure provided under Section 21 of the KUST Amendment Law 2017, as well as relevant labour laws and conventions.

The union further alleged that the Governing Council, which approved the document, was not properly constituted, claiming that the university administration failed to convene a Senate meeting to elect a Senate representative to the council.

ASUU also accused the administration of violating other provisions of the university law, including the alleged failure to release the institution’s audited accounts for over 3 years and the inability to hold regular statutory meetings of the Senate and the Budget Monitoring Committee.
