World Cup: Senegal Brush Aside Fan Visa Setback Ahead Of France Clash

Senegal remain confident of making a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite being deprived of the support of many travelling fans due to visa restrictions imposed by the United States.

The Lions of Teranga are among several nations whose supporters have been unable to secure entry to follow their teams during the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Senegal open their campaign against France in New Jersey before facing Norway later in the group stage, but they will do so without the large contingent of supporters who traditionally accompany the national team.

Senegalese Football Federation secretary-general Abdoulaye Sow described the situation as “regrettable” but acknowledged that the host nation has the right to enforce its own immigration policies.

“The United States has its own laws and regulations, and we have to respect them,” Sow told AFP.

“Unlike in many European countries, we have not been able to benefit from the support of many Senegalese and African fans who wished to travel.”

This marks the first World Cup in which Senegal have participated without an officially organised fan delegation backed by the government.

The absence of vocal support represents an additional challenge for a side widely viewed as one of Africa’s strongest hopes at the expanded 48-team tournament.

Senegal famously reached the quarter-finals on their World Cup debut in 2002 and advanced to the last 16 in Qatar four years ago. With a record 10 African nations participating this year, expectations remain high for another strong showing.

Sow admitted African teams have been disproportionately affected by the travel restrictions but insisted the players remain focused on matters on the pitch.

“Senegal have always enjoyed the backing of a 12th man, and we will miss that support,” he said.

“However, matches are won on the field, not in the stands. Our players know what is at stake and are determined to give everything for the country.”
