Daura was thrown into profound mourning on Saturday following the tragic killing of a 96-year-old woman, Hajiya Umma Husaini.

According to multiple sources, the older woman was allegedly attacked by her granddaughter, Aisha Muktar, who was accused of hitting her with a mortar at their residence.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday.

It was gathered that neighbours and relatives who rushed to the scene met Hajiya Umma lying in a pool of blood, unconscious and severely injured.

Alarmed by her condition, they immediately rushed her to the Daura Federal Medical Centre for urgent medical attention.

“She was bleeding profusely when we arrived,” one of the sources said. “We immediately carried her to the hospital to save her life.”

Despite efforts by medical personnel, the older woman was confirmed dead a few hours later, plunging the family and the wider Daura community into grief.

The deceased’s eldest son, Muktar Husaini, confirmed the incident and described the killing as devastating and completely unexpected.

“My mother was indeed attacked and later died at the hospital,” he said. “We are all in shock because she had no history of misunderstanding with anyone in Daura,” he said.

Muktar further described his late mother as a peaceful and humble woman who spent her life caring for her family and maintaining good relations with neighbours.

“My mother was a very calm and patient woman. She never quarrelled with anyone, and she was respected by everyone who knew her,” he added.

Family members and residents also described the deceased as a woman who endured years of health challenges with remarkable resilience.

According to relatives, Hajiya Umma had battled diabetes for many years, a condition that eventually led to the amputation of both her legs.

Despite her frail health and physical limitations, she was said to have remained prayerful, gentle and strong-willed until her death.

The incident drew sympathisers to the family’s house as residents struggled to come to terms with the violent death of an older woman widely regarded as harmless and peaceful.

The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating the incident.

Police spokesperson in Katsina, DSP Sadik Aliyu, disclosed that the suspect has been taken into custody, while investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and its motive.

Community leaders and residents have condemned the killing and called for justice, urging authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. The incident has also renewed concerns over domestic violence and the safety of elderly persons within households.
