NSCIA Sounds The Alarm Over Insecurity, Hardship As Muslims Mark New Islamic Year

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called for urgent action to tackle insecurity and economic hardship across the country, while urging Nigerians to embrace unity, peace and national development as Muslims celebrate the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the Council said the new Hijrah year presents an opportunity for reflection, spiritual renewal and recommitment to values that promote justice, compassion and social harmony.

The statement, signed by the NSCIA’s Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, on behalf of the Council, conveyed the goodwill message of its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The Council expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the country, citing persistent banditry in the North-West, insurgency in the North-East and the growing menace of kidnapping across several regions.

According to the NSCIA, recent abductions involving schoolchildren and teachers underscore the urgent need for more decisive measures to safeguard lives and property.

“The safety of citizens remains a critical concern,” the Council said, urging all tiers of government, security agencies, traditional institutions and community leaders to intensify efforts to restore peace and security nationwide.

The Islamic body also acknowledged the economic pressures facing millions of Nigerians, noting that rising living costs, food inflation and unemployment continue to place enormous strain on households.

While recognising ongoing government reforms, the Council urged authorities to ensure that such policies are accompanied by effective social support measures and economic inclusion programmes that reach the poorest and most vulnerable citizens.

The NSCIA further called on Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to reject divisive tendencies and work together to address the nation’s challenges.

It stressed that national development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, adding that justice, accountability and good governance remain essential tools in the fight against insecurity and corruption.

As Muslims begin the new Islamic calendar year, the Council encouraged increased devotion through prayers, charity and acts of kindness, while praying for lasting peace, prosperity and sustainable development in Nigeria.
