The Nigerian Army has renovated and officially commissioned the headquarters of the 81 Battalion, alongside the Commanding Officer’s residence at Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of efforts to strengthen troop welfare and improve operational efficiency.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, said the projects underscored the Army’s continued commitment to providing a conducive environment for both work and living for personnel.

General Nnebeife explained that the development aligned with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, particularly the “Soldiers First” policy, which prioritises the welfare of troops and their families.

He noted that adequate infrastructure plays a critical role in boosting morale, productivity and overall combat readiness within the military.

“The projects commissioned today are not merely structural upgrades. They are strategic investments in the operational effectiveness, combat readiness and long-term efficiency of the battalion.

“While the renovated battalion headquarters would improve command and administrative operations, the upgraded official residence would provide better comfort and welfare for the Commanding Officer and his family,” he stated.

Nnebeife commended the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining welfare-driven initiatives across Army formations and encouraged personnel to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.

He also praised the outgoing Commanding Officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, for initiating and successfully delivering the projects.

Describing Agaku as a committed and professional officer, the GOC urged other commanders to emulate his dedication to enhancing troop welfare.

Earlier, Agaku said the renovation became necessary after an assessment of existing infrastructure within the barracks shortly after he assumed command on February 7, 2025.

According to him, “The review revealed the need to rehabilitate key infrastructure to provide a better environment for officers, soldiers and their families.”

He added that the initiative was guided by the Army’s welfare philosophy, stressing that “a motivated soldier is a productive soldier.”

Agaku further explained that the battalion headquarters underwent extensive rehabilitation, which included “reroofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades, office reconfiguration, installation of modern fittings, tiling, painting and environmental improvements.

“This project was not just about renovating buildings; it was about restoring pride, boosting morale and creating an atmosphere where personnel can effectively carry out their duties,” he said.

He disclosed that the project commenced on February 17, 2025, and was completed on May 15, 2026, after rigorous supervision and quality control processes.

The CO expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, the GOC, officers, soldiers, civilian staff and other stakeholders whose support contributed to the successful completion of the work.

Also speaking, the project supervisor and Adjutant of 81 Battalion, Captain Femi Ajia, said the renovation was carried out through careful planning, close supervision and strict adherence to quality standards.

Ajia added that the project was aimed at improving personnel welfare, enhancing administrative efficiency and creating a more conducive environment for military operations.

“The successful completion of these projects reflects effective coordination, dedication of personnel and prudent utilisation of available resources,” he said.

The renovated battalion headquarters now contains 12 offices, a conference room, upgraded workspaces, furnished workstations, air conditioners, refrigerators, modern fittings and a newly constructed car park.

Similarly, the Commanding Officer’s residence now features improved security installations, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, paved driveways, a garage, guest facilities, bedrooms, kitchen, dining area, balconies and other modern amenities.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, commanders of affiliated formations and units, personnel of 81 Battalion, family members and other invited guests.
