A 23-year-old student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been found dead in her apartment in Uruezeani, Alor, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The deceased, identified as Chiamaka Chilaka, was an ND II student of the institution and hailed from Isingu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. She was reportedly discovered lifeless in her residence on Sunday after a church service.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, where a viral video captured a grieving cleric crying out repeatedly, “My daughter, my daughter,” as he mourned the young student.

The video also contained unverified claims alleging that the deceased had repeatedly rejected alleged advances from her landlord and was last seen in a confrontation with him before her death. However, the police have not confirmed these allegations.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident on Thursday, said the landlord had been arrested and was assisting investigators.

Ikenga disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had directed a thorough investigation into the case after it was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for detailed inquiry.

According to the police spokesperson, officers who visited the scene observed visible injuries on the deceased, including a deep cut on her thigh, other marks of violence and blood stains, raising suspicions of possible foul play.

“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed investigative officers to expedite action on the investigation into the reported suspected murder of a 23-year-old female student whose lifeless body was discovered at her residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” Ikenga said.

He added that the directive followed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive and discreet investigation.

Ikenga further disclosed that the student’s body had been deposited in a mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.

“Meanwhile, the landlord of the premises has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing interrogation as part of ongoing investigations,” he said.

The Anambra State Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway and pledged that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law. It also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to come forward and assist investigators.
