A suspect has confessed to the killing of 21-year-old nursing student Wendy Chinwendu Achumba, narrating how he allegedly struck her with a wooden object while his accomplice slit her throat during a violent attack in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.

The victim, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Umulogho, was killed in her off-campus lodge on May 21, 2026, in an incident that has sparked outrage in the community and led to a manhunt for the suspects.

According to the confession, the suspect and his accomplice — identified as Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi — entered the victim’s residence while she was alone after her roommates had travelled out for clinical duty.

The suspect alleged that they initially attempted to have sexual relations with the victim, but she resisted, leading to a struggle inside the room.

He further stated that the victim sustained injuries while resisting the attack and that the situation escalated into violence.

Fearing exposure, the suspect said he struck her with a wooden object during the struggle, while his accomplice allegedly used a knife to slit her throat.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene after stealing the victim’s mobile phone.

Community youths later discovered the crime and launched a search, eventually apprehending one of the suspects after noticing scratch marks on his face. He was subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force.

The suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for further interrogation and prosecution.

Police authorities in Imo State have also confirmed the arrest of a second suspect, who is currently in custody, as investigations continue under the Imo State Police Command.
