Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has warned the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, against statements attributed to him that, “We have all it takes to consume and destroy whoever is trying to harm us.”

The group advised him on political tolerance in his democratic engagement.

At a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the deputy national president of the organisation, Comrade Nasir Doka, expressed concern about the governor’s statement.

According to Doka, the comment, which has circulated widely in the public domain, has generated apprehension among many Nigerians, particularly young people, who perceive the language as potentially threatening and inconsistent with democratic principles.

The youth group noted that statements made by elected officials, especially governors, carry significant weight because of the influence and authority attached to their offices.

“A governor is not merely a political actor; he is the chief security officer of his state, a symbol of government authority, and a custodian of constitutional order,” Doka said.

He argued that comments suggesting the destruction of perceived opponents could be interpreted differently and might leave citizens questioning whether criticism of the government, political opposition, or democratic disagreement could be viewed as acts of hostility.

The NYO maintained that democracy thrives on tolerance, dissent, freedom of expression, and healthy competition of ideas, stressing that no democratic society can flourish where citizens fear expressing political opinions or criticising government policies.

The organisation further warned that political rhetoric perceived as confrontational could send the wrong message to young people and potentially encourage intolerance among political supporters.

According to Doka, Nigerian youths often take cues from political leaders, making it imperative for public office holders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public communications.

The group also described the matter as a national security concern, noting that public statements that could heighten political tensions should attract the attention of stakeholders committed to maintaining peace and stability.

“At a time when Nigeria is grappling with multiple security challenges, the language of governance must inspire confidence, trust, and peace rather than fear and apprehension,” he said.

He reiterated the group’s commitment to promoting peace, defending democracy, and speaking out whenever the rights and freedoms of Nigerian citizens appear to be under threat
