….Warns Operators To Upgrade Vehicles

The (FAAN) has increased operational charges for airport cab operators by 200 per cent, raising the fee from N500 to N1,500 as part of ongoing reforms in airport transport services.

The authority said the adjustment is aimed at improving service delivery, sustaining airport infrastructure, and modernising ground transportation across Nigerian airports.

FAAN also directed airport taxi operators to comply with its vehicle upgrade requirements, stressing that only roadworthy, clean and professionally maintained vehicles would be allowed to operate within airport terminals.

According to the agency, the reforms are designed to align airport taxi operations with international standards, enhancing safety, comfort and reliability for passengers.

It noted that the previous N500 charge had remained unchanged for over eight years despite rising inflation, increased maintenance costs and broader economic pressures, making the upward review necessary.

FAAN dismissed claims of inadequate stakeholder consultation, explaining that engagements have been carried out directly with licensed airport transport companies rather than umbrella trade associations.

The authority added that its contractual relationship is strictly with registered cab operators approved to work within airport terminals.

It further disclosed that discussions on the vehicle upgrade policy began in July 2024, giving operators over two years to prepare for full compliance.

According to FAAN, the implementation deadline was first extended to January 2026 and later moved to June 2026 following appeals from operators.

The agency said it is now considering a final extension to October 2026, warning that the new date may be the last opportunity for compliance.

FAAN urged operators to take advantage of the extended timeline to upgrade their vehicles and align with the new standards, cautioning that further extensions may not be granted.
