Senegal winger Ismaila Sarr has insisted the Teranga Lions’ FIFA World Cup hopes remain firmly alive despite their dramatic 3-2 defeat to Norway in a crucial Group F encounter.

The loss at the New York/New Jersey Stadium dealt a major blow to Senegal’s qualification ambitions, with Norway securing progression to the Round of 32 alongside France following the result.

Pape Thiaw’s side produced a spirited display but were ultimately punished by a clinical Norwegian team that capitalised on defensive lapses to claim all three points.

Sarr was Senegal’s standout performer on the night, scoring twice to keep his side in contention. The Marseille forward first found the net with a powerful left-footed strike before calmly converting a penalty, but his efforts were not enough to prevent defeat.

The result leaves Senegal facing a must-win final group match against Iraq if they are to keep their World Cup campaign alive. Anything less than victory would see the African champions exit the tournament.

Speaking after the match, a disappointed but determined Sarr urged his teammates to remain focused on the task ahead.

“It hurts because we gave everything, but football can be decided by small moments,” Sarr told FIFA.com.

“However, our story is not over. We still have one match left and that game against Iraq is now the most important one for us. We have to recover, analyse our mistakes and come back stronger.

“We know what is at stake. We have to win and we will do everything possible to achieve that.”

The 27-year-old admitted Senegal paid the price for costly defensive mistakes but stressed that the team’s fighting spirit remains intact.

“We have faced difficult situations before and always responded. This team has character and belief. We will work hard in training this week and make sure we are ready for the challenge ahead,” he added.

Despite the setback, Senegal remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds and will now turn their full attention to their decisive clash with Iraq.

With their World Cup future hanging in the balance, the Teranga Lions know only victory will suffice as they seek to extend their stay at the tournament and keep their dreams of glory alive.
