The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a warning to motorists across the country that fully tinted vehicles will not be allowed to operate in Nigeria, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen national security and curb criminal activities.

The IGP gave the warning on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by its President, Afam Osigwe, during a courtesy visit.

He said intelligence and security reports have linked several major crimes to vehicles with fully blacked-out windows, stressing that such practices pose serious operational challenges for law enforcement agencies.

According to him, fully tinted vehicles make it difficult to identify occupants and have increasingly been associated with criminal activities across different parts of the country.

“The law allows tinted glass on vehicles for medical reasons, factory-fitted specifications or security reasons. Even at that, the vehicles are not fully tinted as some motorists do in Nigeria,” he said.

He stressed that vehicles with completely blacked-out windows would no longer be permitted to operate, warning that enforcement measures, including impoundment, would be strictly applied.

The police chief also warned against the use of defaced or concealed number plates, noting that such violations would attract similar enforcement actions as part of broader efforts to enhance compliance with traffic and security regulations.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working closely with stakeholders, including the legal profession, to strengthen the rule of law and improve internal security.

In his remarks, NBA President Afam Osigwe commended the police leadership for its efforts in tackling insecurity and strengthening policing structures across the country.

He emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between the Bar and the police in safeguarding citizens’ rights while ensuring effective law enforcement.

Osigwe also raised concerns about the handling of bail and sureties in some police stations, alleging instances of irregular practices that require attention.
