Colombia Hold Portugal, Top Group K Despite Disallowed Late Winner

Colombia secured top spot in Group K after battling to a hard-fought goalless draw with Portugal, despite seeing a dramatic late winner controversially ruled out for offside in an entertaining FIFA World Cup encounter in Miami.

The South Americans thought they had snatched victory in the 90th minute when defender Davinson Sánchez headed home from close range. However, the assistant referee’s flag cut short the celebrations, with replays showing the former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back’s toe had strayed marginally beyond the last defender before the cross was delivered.

Although the decision was correct under the Laws of the Game, it sparked frustration among Colombia’s players and supporters, who felt they had done enough to earn all three points after dominating much of the contest.

The result was still enough for Colombia to finish top of Group K, while Portugal progressed as runners-up after failing to find the victory they needed to claim first place.

Roared on by thousands of passionate supporters dressed in yellow, Colombia made an aggressive start and almost broke the deadlock inside the opening minute when Jhon Córdoba headed narrowly over the crossbar.

The striker, restored to the starting line-up, was then denied by an outstanding one-handed save from Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who produced one of the finest stops of the match.

Portugal gradually settled into the contest, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo leading the attack. However, the 41-year-old found himself largely isolated as Colombia’s defence kept him quiet for long spells.

The Europeans’ best opportunity of the first half fell to Bruno Fernandes, whose close-range effort was brilliantly repelled by Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas with a superb reflex save.

Colombia resumed the second half with renewed intensity and repeatedly threatened the Portuguese goal. Midfielders Richard Ríos and Gustavo Puerta both came close, while Luis Suárez squandered a glorious opportunity by volleying over an unguarded net.

The South Americans believed they had finally found the decisive breakthrough when Sánchez headed past Costa in the closing moments, only for the goal to be ruled out following an offside decision that was confirmed by replays.

Despite being denied a deserved victory, Colombia finished top of Group K after recording their first scoreless World Cup match since their defeat to England in 1998.

Portugal, meanwhile, advance to the knockout stage as group runners-up, with both sides now turning their attention to the last 32 as the race for World Cup glory intensifies.
