Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan remains optimistic that captain Mohamed Salah has not suffered a serious injury after the star forward was forced off during the Pharaohs’ 1-1 draw with Iran at the FIFA World Cup.

The result secured Egypt’s place in the last 32 after they finished second in Group G, but the celebrations were tempered by concerns over the fitness of their talisman ahead of the knockout stage.

Salah was substituted in the 57th minute after appearing to suffer a problem with his left thigh. The Liverpool forward was seen applying an ice pack to the affected area as he left the pitch, raising fears of a potential injury setback.

Speaking after the match, Hassan sought to calm concerns, revealing that initial discussions with the player had been encouraging.

“The doctor will prepare his report when we return to the hotel and carry out another examination,” Hassan said.

“I spoke with Salah and, God willing, the injury does not appear to be serious.

“He assured me that everything will be fine and that it is not a major injury.”

Egypt will now turn their attention to a last-32 showdown with Australia in Dallas on 3 July, where a place in the round of 16 will be at stake.

The Pharaohs will hope Salah is declared fit in time, with the captain expected to play a pivotal role as Egypt look to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
