The National Schools Football Championship (NSFC) 2026 has broken new ground by combining elite school football with a comprehensive student-athlete wellbeing initiative, as the competition entered its decisive stages in Abuja with the emergence of the boys’ semi-finalists and the confirmation of the girls’ finalists.

Organised by the Kick Start Sports Foundation (KSF), the championship staged a landmark 7 Pillars of Student-Athlete Wellbeing Workshop at the Conference Hall of Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, making it the first time a structured wellbeing and safeguarding programme of such scale has been delivered during a national school football championship in Nigeria.

The two-session workshop brought together coaches, safeguarding officers, team captains and assistant captains from all participating schools across the country. It focused on promoting holistic development by addressing issues beyond football, including nutrition, injury prevention, mental health, examination pressure, player protection, safeguarding protocols, career development pathways and the role of the media in shaping the lives of young athletes.

Facilitated by a distinguished panel of experts comprising the Nigeria Football Federation’s Safeguarding Officer, a CAF B Licensed Coach, the Chairman of the FCT chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), and a physiotherapist from the National Sports Commission’s Sports Medicine Department, the workshop centred on the seven pillars of student-athlete wellbeing: Participation, Fun, Respect, Fair Play, Health, Skill and Team Spirit.

At the end of the programme, participants pledged to uphold the seven pillars throughout the remainder of the championship and completed post-session evaluations as part of the tournament’s Fair Play and Team Discipline framework, which aligns with international standards set by FIFA and the International School Sport Federation (ISF).

Olumawu School was also recognised for exemplary conduct after emerging winner of the NSFC 2026 Punctuality and Discipline Award, having arrived first at the workshop venue. The award will be formally presented during Monday’s closing ceremony.

Speaking during the workshop, KSF President and Founder Ibrahim Bello said the competition was designed to develop not only talented footballers but also responsible young leaders.

“The NSFC is not just a football competition. It is a development platform. Today we invested in the character of these young people—not just their skills on the pitch. What happens in that workshop room shapes who they become long after the final whistle. That is the mission of KSF,” Bello said.

Meanwhile, the battle for national honours intensified on the pitch as the boys’ semi-final fixtures were confirmed following the conclusion of the group stage.

Parliament International School, Apo, sealed top spot in Group B with a perfect record after defeating Esteem Learning Centre 2-0 at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch. Muhammad Nasir scored both goals to ensure his side finished with the maximum nine points from three matches.

The victory set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Brilliant Academy of Toro, Bauchi State, the North-East zonal champions, who secured the second semi-final ticket after recording two wins and one defeat.

Divine Mercy School, Asokoro, also progressed after overcoming Olumawu School 3-1 in their final group match. Sunday Mark starred with a first-half brace as Divine Mercy finished second in Group B on six points.

Their reward is arguably the toughest test of the competition—a semi-final showdown against North Central champions Fosla Academy, who dominated Group A with three victories from three matches to maintain their flawless record.

Government Secondary School, Lugbe, and Glisten International School bowed out after finishing outside the qualification places, while Esteem Learning Centre and Olumawu School exited the competition after managing only one point each from their three matches.

The winners of Sunday’s semi-finals will contest the boys’ final on Monday at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch inside the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

In the girls’ competition, Fosla Academy booked their place in the final in emphatic fashion after Patricia Habila produced a stunning hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Aduvie International School.

The impressive performance earned Fosla Academy a place in Monday’s championship match, where they will face Government Secondary School, Lugbe, in the battle for the girls’ national title.

With football excellence now complemented by a pioneering emphasis on safeguarding, education and personal development, the NSFC 2026 continues to set a new benchmark for grassroots school sports in Nigeria, demonstrating that nurturing character is every bit as important as producing champions on the field.
