WhatsApp To Introduce Username Feature 

Meta has announced a major privacy update for WhatsApp that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of personal phone numbers.

The new feature, which will roll out gradually over the coming months, is designed to enhance user privacy by keeping phone numbers hidden during first-time conversations and within public or large group chats.

According to an official statement from WhatsApp, the system is specifically built to protect personal contact information. Once active, individuals cannot be found through a public directory or automated search suggestions. To start a chat, other users will need to know and enter an exact, specific username.

Due to the platform’s global user base of over three billion people, Meta noted that some users may not get their first choice of username. The rollout will happen in stages, and users will receive a notification when username registration becomes available in their respective regions.

Additionally, Meta confirmed that public figures, organisations, and small businesses will have the opportunity to secure usernames that match their existing official handles on Facebook and Instagram.
