Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Afolayan, popularly known as Lola Idije, has warned against pressuring young women to marry early, stating that some women are naturally destined to marry in their 40s or 50s.
Speaking during an appearance on the Africanlist Podcast, the actress defended single mothers and called for an end to social stigma against women raising children alone.
“Not everybody will have a husband to help them raise their children. So women have to carry their burden alone. Not all of them choose that life,” Idije said.
She also talks about many women become single mothers due to circumstances beyond their control, stressing that raising children without a husband does not mean a woman is irresponsible.
The actress also questioned the societal rush to marry off young women, warning that early pressure often leads to poor life choices.
“If you start pressuring them at 20, how can you be sure that they won’t marry the wrong person?” she argued.
Reflecting on the transformative nature of family life, lola Idije added that women naturally become softer and more compassionate once they embrace motherhood.
