Abia State government has moved to shape the future of young girls in the state in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and inspire their curiosity to pursue their dreams through technology and innovation.
The state commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, David Kalu stated this at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Week in the state in Umuahia, the capital.
He announced the government’s establishment of the State Abia Girls in ICT Clubs digital platform “designed to promote digital literacy in STEM education and harness the girls’ potential in technology and innovation”.
Kalu explained that the launch had demonstrated the present administration’s commitment towards empowering girls with digital competence, fostering, mentoring opportunities and long-standing gender gaps in technology and innovation.
The commissioner further said it would promote equitable access to technological advancement and support systems needed to drive female leadership and innovation in the Information Communication Technology sector.
He described the theme of the week “Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow, the Science We Need for 2050” as very crucial as the presentation administration in the state is on the fastrack of development.
In their separate remarks, the commissioner for Women Affairs, Maureen Ahokwa, and the vice-chancellor, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ursula Akanwa lauded the innovation.
Similarly, the executive chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board(ASUBEB), Lydia Onuoha, said the launch would inspire the girls to take STEM education with hope.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP, some of the students, Excellence Nmere of Dorothy International Early Learning School, Aba, and Ndidi Victoria of Abia State Senior Science School, Owerinta, described the event as memorable.
