Manchester United Renew Interest In Super Eagles Captain Ndidi

Manchester United have reportedly revived their interest in Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi as they step up the search for a replacement for Casemiro, although they face competition from newly promoted Hull City and several Saudi Pro League clubs for the midfielder’s signature.

Casemiro left Old Trafford at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract, prompting United to explore fresh options after missing out on a number of preferred midfield targets.

The Red Devils were linked with Elliott Anderson, while Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali have since completed moves to Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, forcing United to reassess their plans.

According to reports, the Premier League giants have now turned their attention back to Ndidi, having first shown interest in the Super Eagles captain last summer.

The 29-year-old had been keen to leave Leicester City, but a transfer failed to materialise before he eventually joined Turkish giants Besiktas.

Ndidi has since established himself as one of the Turkish Super Lig’s most consistent midfielders, making 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice and providing one assist.

However, uncertainty over his future has emerged following a managerial change at Besiktas, with the Istanbul club reportedly prepared to entertain offers and valuing the Nigerian international at around €8 million.

According to Footy Africa, Hull City are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation as they strengthen their squad for life back in the Premier League, while clubs from the Saudi Pro League are also keeping tabs on him.

Ndidi enjoyed an impressive eight-year spell at Leicester City after joining from Belgian side Genk, making more than 200 appearances and earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished defensive midfielders.

During his time at the King Power Stadium, he helped Leicester lift the FA Cup and the Community Shield. He also played a key role in Nigeria’s run to a third-place finish at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

If a move to Old Trafford is completed, Ndidi would become only the second Nigerian footballer to play for Manchester United after Odion Ighalo.
