Many football fans following the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup initially believed the lively pidgin voice on SuperSport belonged to popular comedian Real Warri Pikin. The striking resemblance between the two voices has sparked widespread conversation across social media.

The commentator behind the now-viral broadcasts is, however, Chief Suo Chapele, whose energetic and humorous style has made her one of the standout voices of the tournament.

The confusion became so widespread that even some of Real Warri Pikin’s close relatives reportedly mistook Chapele’s commentary for the comedian’s. The comedian, whose real name is Anita Asuoha, eventually released a video clarifying that she was not the person behind the microphone.

Born Tracy Chapele-Ugo, Chapele is the 14th of 18 children. She grew up in Warri, Delta State, during the 1990s and early 2000s, describing her upbringing as a blend of waterside culture, vibrant southern traditions and strong religious values.

Speaking in an interview with BellaNaija, she credited her late parents, Chief Oletu Chapele and Mrs Helen Nneka Chapele, for encouraging their children to embrace sports and reading as leisure activities.

Her educational journey took her through Nana Primary School, DSC Model School 2, Airforce Secondary School, Our Ladies’ High School and Aladja Grammar School before she attended the University of Benin and later John Moores University.

Chapele’s passion for football dates back to childhood. She has often recalled that watching sports broadcaster Chisom Mbonu-Ezeoke anchor the 2010 FIFA World Cup while pregnant inspired her to believe a career in sports broadcasting was attainable.

Her entry into pidgin sports commentary came unexpectedly.

According to BellaNaija, Chapele auditioned for both English and pidgin presenter roles at Brila FM in Lagos in November 2014. Having never presented in pidgin before, she converted her prepared English script into pidgin during the audition.

In another interview with City People, she offered a lighter version of the story, saying she opted for the pidgin audition because the queue was much shorter than the English one and she urgently needed a job as her son was about to celebrate his first birthday.

Whichever version one chooses, the gamble paid off. Within five months, she had developed and hosted her own pidgin sports programme on the station.

Since then, Chapele has become one of SuperSport’s most recognisable presenters, providing pidgin commentary for the English Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, while also covering major international tournaments including the Africa Cup of Nations, Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, having previously worked at the Qatar 2022 tournament.

Her unique broadcasting style has also attracted international recognition.

During Euro 2024, she revealed that Germany’s Ministry of Art and Culture invited her pidgin commentary to be featured in a museum exhibition in Berlin alongside renowned commentators including Peter Drury and Ernest Okonkwo.

Away from broadcasting, Chapele also holds a traditional title.

In a 2023 interview, she disclosed that the Ovie of Udu Kingdom in Delta State transferred her late father’s chieftaincy title to her, making her the first woman in the kingdom’s history to inherit a title that traditionally passes from father to son.

She expanded her career into acting in 2024 when she appeared in the Inkblot Productions film When Love Strikes. According to her, producer Ifunanya Valerie contacted her on Instagram after watching clips of her sports commentary.

Beyond her growing popularity at the World Cup, Chapele has consistently advocated for Nigerian pidgin as a credible language for mainstream broadcasting.

She has noted that Nigerian pidgin sports commentary first gained international prominence through Emeka Enyadike during the 2000 Sydney Olympics and believes the language’s millions of speakers have created greater opportunities for local-language coverage of sports and other events.
