Switzerland held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat Colombia 4-3 after a goalless 120 minutes, booking a place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals where they will face Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

In a tense last-16 encounter that produced plenty of commitment but few clear-cut chances, neither side could find a breakthrough despite battling through regulation time and extra time.

The Swiss looked the more adventurous after the interval, with captain Granit Xhaka testing Colombia’s resolve early in the second half before Denis Zakaria also came close to breaking the deadlock. Colombia responded through Luis Suárez, who threatened just after the hour mark but was unable to beat the Swiss defence.

The match became increasingly physical as fatigue set in. Colombia defender Davinson Sánchez was booked in the closing stages of normal time, while Switzerland’s Miro Muheim also entered the referee’s notebook during extra time as both teams fought desperately to avoid conceding.

With neither goalkeeper beaten after 120 minutes, the contest was settled from the penalty spot.

Xhaka confidently converted Switzerland’s opening kick before Colombia’s Juan Fernando Quintero responded in kind.

Zeki Amdouni restored the Swiss advantage, but Sánchez levelled once again. Manuel Akanji then converted his effort before Jhon Campaz kept Colombia in touch.

Cedric Itten made it 3-2 for Switzerland, only for Jhon Córdoba Hernández to equalise and take the shootout into the decisive rounds.

Ruben Vargas calmly converted Switzerland’s fourth penalty, leaving Colombia’s star winger Luis Díaz needing to score to keep his side alive. However, Díaz failed from the spot, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Swiss players as they sealed a 4-3 shootout victory.

The result sends Switzerland into the last eight, where they face one of the tournament favourites, Argentina, in what promises to be a fascinating quarter-final encounter.

For Colombia, it was a heartbreaking end to an impressive World Cup campaign, with their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals ending in the cruellest fashion after matching Switzerland throughout a fiercely contested contest.

Switzerland, meanwhile, remain in the hunt for a first-ever FIFA World Cup semi-final and will now attempt to halt Argentina’s title charge in the quarter-finals.
