Commonwealth Games: Odobeatu Unveils $2,000 Medal Incentive For Nigeria’s Swimmers

South-East Representative on the Board of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), Joseph Odobeatu Anayo, has announced a lucrative cash reward scheme of up to 2,000 US dollars for Nigerian swimmers who win medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The businessman and sports philanthropist, popularly known as Ojez, said the initiative is designed to motivate the athletes while complementing government efforts to ensure Team Nigeria enjoys a successful outing at the Games, scheduled for 23 July to 2 August.

Under the incentive package, every Nigerian swimmer who wins a gold medal will receive 2,000 US dollars, silver medallists will earn 1,000 US dollars, while bronze medallists will receive 500 US dollars.

“Our swimmers deserve every encouragement as they prepare to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games,” Odobeatu said.

“This reward is my way of inspiring them to aim for the podium and make Nigeria proud.

“I am offering 2,000 US dollars for every gold medal, 1,000 US dollars for every silver medal and 500 US dollars for every bronze medal because excellence deserves to be rewarded.”

He stressed that financial incentives alone are not enough, noting that consistent recognition plays a vital role in producing elite athletes.

“This is not just about money. It is about inspiring our athletes to believe that their hard work and sacrifices are appreciated.

“Government cannot do it alone. The private sector must continue partnering with the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and other sports bodies to provide opportunities for our athletes to succeed.”

Odobeatu has consistently rewarded outstanding performances in Nigerian aquatics. Following the recent 17th African Swimming Championships in Oran, Algeria, he presented cash rewards to medal-winning swimmers Collins Ebingha and India Brown in recognition of their achievements.

With Glasgow 2026 fast approaching, the latest incentive is expected to provide an added boost for Nigeria’s swimmers as they chase podium finishes on the Commonwealth stage.
