The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians to disregard a fake online portal circulating on social media, describing it as a phishing scam designed to steal citizens’ personal information under the guise of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The Commission said the fraudulent message, titled “INEC ONLINE VOTERS REGISTRATION 2026 ONGOING,” has been widely circulated on WhatsApp and other digital platforms, misleading members of the public into believing they can register through an unofficial website.

The viral post directs users to the website falsely claiming that the deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise is August 17, 2026.

It also claims that the home addresses provided by applicants would be used to deliver their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Reacting to the development, INEC Deputy Director of Information and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, described the website as fake and urged Nigerians not to click on the link or submit their personal information.

Speaking in an interview in Abuja, Ifogah said the portal was created to harvest unsuspecting citizens’ personal data for fraudulent purposes.

He advised members of the public to disregard the message, warning that interacting with the fake website could expose users to identity theft and cyber fraud.

“INEC does not use third-party blogging links or private URL for official exercises, nor does it deliver PVCs to private residences,” he said.

The Commission urged Nigerians to obtain information on the Continuous Voter Registration exercise and other electoral activities only through INEC’s official communication channels.
