One of Zamfara State’s most wanted bandit commanders, Kachalla Sani Yellow, has been killed during a joint operation by security forces and local vigilantes in Anka Local Government Area, marking a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the state.
Security sources said Yellow was neutralised on July 10, 2026, at Dan Jibga Market after armed bandits attacked construction workers in the area. The operation involved troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes, also known as the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), who were recently deployed to reinforce counter-banditry operations in Zamfara.
Following the operation, residents gathered in Anka Town after reports of Yellow’s death spread. Security sources said his body was later transported through parts of the town by local residents as confirmation that the notorious bandit leader had been killed.
For years, Kachalla Sani Yellow was regarded as one of the most influential bandit commanders operating across the forests of Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring local government areas.
Intelligence reports linked him to numerous kidnappings for ransom targeting schools, villages and travellers, as well as large-scale cattle rustling and deadly attacks that displaced thousands of residents and disrupted farming activities across the region.
His criminal network was considered a major force behind banditry in northwestern Zamfara, making him one of the country’s most wanted armed group leaders.
Security sources said the July 10 operation formed part of the sustained offensive by Operation FANSAN YANMA to dismantle criminal enclaves and eliminate high-profile bandit commanders operating across the North-West.
However, security analysts warned that Yellow’s death could trigger fresh violence as rival factions compete for control of his former territory. Hours after the operation, armed groups believed to be loyal to rival bandit leaders reportedly attacked communities in neighbouring Tsafe Local Government Area, carrying out abductions and looting.
In response, troops and police have intensified patrols and pursuit operations across Anka, Tsafe and adjoining communities to prevent reprisals and restore normalcy.
Security officials described Yellow’s killing as a significant gain in the federal government’s campaign against banditry, but noted that sustained operations would be required to dismantle the wider criminal networks operating across Zamfara and other parts of the North-West.
They reaffirmed that security operations would continue until lasting peace and normalcy are restored in the affected communities.
