The people of Orlu zone in Imo state, covering 12 local government areas, have warned lawmakers against poor representation, demanding better performance from their representatives in State and National Assembly.

The people lamented that the 17 lawmakers representing the zone across the Imo State House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate were not engaging the constituents enough.

The Orluzurume Youths Assembly made the call at the formal presentation of the 72-page report on the Legislative Performance Assessment Committee (LPAC) report of the lawmakers in Orlu zone.

President of the Orluzurume Youths Assembly, Prince Izunna Obiefule lamented that many lawmakers from the zone do not interface with the people to get their inputs.

According to him, the report was the outcome of the interactions with the people across the 12 local government areas, concerning each lawmaker before their constituents.

He said the report comprised the representation of 17 lawmakers which consists of 12 lawmakers at the State House of Assembly, four members of the House of Representatives, and the Senator representing the zone.

Obiefule said the assessment report of Achi Nnamdi-led committee was not intended to ridicule, embarrass or prosecute any lawmaker, but a sincere civic effort to strengthen democratic accountability and encourage excellence in public service.

He also said the assessment was based on the concerns raised by the constituents on issues centred on inadequate constituency engagement, limited public accountability, weak communication of legislative activities and insufficient empowerment programmes.

Obiefule maintained that the assessment report was a contribution to “building a democratic culture in which performance is measured, leadership is evaluated fairly, and elected representatives remain connected to the aspirations of the people they serve.”

“This report is not a judgment against your personalities, it is an assessment of public service. Leadership is a sacred trust and every evaluation presents an opportunity for reflection, improvement, and renewed commitment to the people”, Obiefule said.

The committee’s chairman, Nnamdi said the panel members interfaced with all the people across the villages and communities in the Orlu senatorial zone, adding that the indices were painstakingly gathered.
