The United States and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation, with both countries pledging to intensify efforts to hold ISIS and those responsible for violence against Christians accountable.
The commitment was disclosed by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria in a post published on its verified Facebook page on Tuesday evening following a meeting between U.S. Assistant Secretary Garcia and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
According to the U.S. Mission, the two officials reviewed progress made under the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group, a key platform for advancing security collaboration between the two countries.
“Assistant Secretary Garcia met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. They reviewed progress under the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group,” the mission stated.
Reaffirming Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s security efforts, the U.S. Mission added: “Together we will use every tool available to hold ISIS and perpetrators of violence against Christians accountable.”
The statement underscores the continued security partnership between the United States and Nigeria as both countries confront terrorism, violent extremism and attacks on vulnerable communities.
Although the U.S. Mission did not disclose further details of the discussions, the meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by both governments to deepen intelligence sharing, counterterrorism cooperation and broader security coordination under the Joint Working Group framework.
Nigeria has continued to battle insurgency and violent extremism, particularly in the North-East, where ISIS-affiliated militants and other terrorist groups have carried out deadly attacks against civilians, security personnel and religious communities. The renewed commitment signals sustained U.S. support for Nigeria’s efforts to address these security challenges.
