The National Institute for Sports (NIS) and Bodyline Fitness and Gym have signed a landmark agreement to introduce a new dimension to marathon events in Nigeria with the launch of the “NIS FitLife” fitness programme, which aims to combine sports, culture, entertainment, and wellness.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed yesterday at the NIS Conference Room in Abuja, with the initiative expected to transform traditional marathon races into a full-day fitness and cultural experience.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu, described the partnership as a major step towards creating a new phase in marathon organisation and sports development in the country.
Shaibu said the collaboration would go beyond the conventional marathon format, where participants simply complete a race and leave, stressing that the new concept would integrate cultural and social activities to create a unique experience.
“This agreement will create a new phase as far as marathons and events are concerned. What we are going to be doing is not just the conventional marathon where you start, and you end, all of us drink glucose, and we say bye-bye to each other,” he said.
The NIS boss revealed that the institute would engage the Ministry of Arts and Culture to bring cultural elements into the event, making it a tourism and entertainment attraction.
“This is going to be a cultural marathon, which engages with other event activities. It’s a whole-day package. The marathon is the first phase, while the cultural and other social activities will follow,” Shaibu added.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would set a new standard for marathon events in Nigeria and inspire similar programmes across the states.
According to him, the Federal Capital Territory would witness a new sporting experience, adding that the partnership reflects the government’s desire to encourage private sector participation in sports development.
“Government is looking for collaboration. The government is looking for partners. The government is looking for the private sector to drive our social, cultural and sporting environment. Bodyline is coming at the right time.”
Shaibu also emphasised the social benefits of engaging Nigerians through sports and fitness activities, noting that increased participation would help keep youths positively engaged.“When we engage them in the morning, engage them in the afternoon and engage them in the evening, Nigeria will be safer for it because they will not be available for negativity.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Bodyline Fitness and Gym, Bankole Opashi, said the partnership would help reposition fitness as an integral part of sports development in Nigeria.
Opashi explained that the first programme under the collaboration, “NIS FitLife,” would begin in Abuja before expanding to other locations. He said the event would be bigger than a conventional half-marathon, featuring several activities designed to attract families, fitness enthusiasts and athletes.
“It’s a fit programme that, together, we’ll be able to do and own Abuja, starting from Abuja. It will not just be the half-marathon. We’ll have loads of events. It will become a family event,” he said.
According to Opashi, the weekend-long carnival would include charity walks, strength challenges, fitness competitions and other activities to promote healthy living.
He also noted that the initiative would restore the place of fitness professionals within Nigeria’s sports structure, as fitness had often been overlooked in sports conversations.
“When we talked sports, fitness was taken out of sport as if, ‘Go sort yourself out.’ But we’re bringing the fitness aspect, which is basically the foundation of sports, back to basics.”
Opashi added that the collaboration would provide opportunities for fitness instructors to contribute more actively to sports policies and development programmes.
The NIS-Bodyline partnership is expected to usher in a new era of sports tourism, wellness and community engagement, with organisers promising an annual event that combines competition, entertainment and cultural celebration.
