Team Nigeria Primed For Glasgow 2026 Medal Quest As King Charles III Leads Opening Ceremony

With just a few days to the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria says it is ready to mount a strong challenge for medals as final preparations gather pace ahead of the opening ceremony.

Nigeria’s sprint sensation, Favour Ashe, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, insisting the athletes are fully motivated to uphold the country’s proud tradition at the Games.

“We have prepared well, and everyone is focused on giving their best. Team Nigeria has a strong tradition at the Commonwealth Games, and we are confident we can compete for medals and make Nigerians proud,” Ashe said.

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, 23 July, at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, where Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla will join thousands of athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators from across the Commonwealth to officially declare the XXIII Commonwealth Games open.

More than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete over 11 days for 215 gold medals across 10 sports.

One of the major highlights of the ceremony will be King Charles III reading the message placed inside the King’s Baton on Commonwealth Day, 10 March 2025, at Buckingham Palace before the Baton Relay begins. British cycling icon Sir Chris Hoy, the first Batonbearer, will also feature prominently in the celebrations, reflecting the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth Games.

The King’s Baton Relay has completed a landmark 500-day journey through all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, making it the longest relay in the history of the Games.

For the first time, all 74 Batons will be reunited in Glasgow, symbolising the unity, diversity and shared values of the Commonwealth.

The relay also supported the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, delivered in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, which engaged communities across member nations in efforts to prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.

Team Nigeria heads to Glasgow determined to build on its impressive Commonwealth Games record, with athletes expected to contend for honours in several events and reinforce the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations.

The National Sports Commission said the contingent remains focused on delivering outstanding performances that will make Nigerians proud when competition begins in Glasgow.
