TCN Boosts Yobe Grid With New 60MVA Mobile Transformer, Raising Substation Capacity To 180MVA

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday night commissioned a 60MVA, 132/33kV mobile power transformer at its Damaturu transmission substation, a move that raises the facility’s transformation capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA.

Commissioned at 9:50pm on July 16, 2026, the transformer strengthens the substation’s operational flexibility and resilience by providing additional redundancy during maintenance and outages and by enabling the facility to meet rising local demand, general manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Ndidi Mbah, stated on Saturday.

The upgrade increases bulk electricity available to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) for offtake and distribution across Damaturu and neighbouring communities, including Buni Yadi, Babangida and the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital.

The project was delivered under TCN’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) programme, part of a wider push to expand and reinforce the national transmission network and improve the reliability and efficiency of bulk power supply.
