Group Demands Probe Of Ogoni Clean-up Project

A civil society organisation, the Ogoni Liberation Initiative, has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop officials of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) from accessing or spending more than N62.5 billion approved as cost variation for the Ogoni Clean-up project, the agency said had already been completed.

In a statement, the group said it had also sued HYPREP and others alleging that the approval of the money did not follow due process and amounts to a misuse of public funds meant for the clean-up of Ogoniland.

The convener of the Ogoni Liberation Initiative, Dr Douglas Fabeke, said the organisation had submitted documents before the court showing alleged financial irregularities

He said some project funds cannot be accounted for and faulted the National Assembly committee oversee.
