The Kano State Police Command has rescued nine passengers abducted by suspected bandits who attacked a commercial bus along the Jos-Kano highway in Doguwa Local Government Area, while three others remain in captivity.

The attack occurred at about 17:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Folgore Forest axis, between Gate Two Safer Highway and Dogo Dutse, when five suspected armed bandits reportedly blocked the road and attacked a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Jos to Kano.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the attackers armed with machetes and a firearm abducted 13 of the 20 passengers on board the vehicle.

Kiyawa said the Divisional Police Officer of Doguwa Division received a distress call and immediately mobilised a team of tactical police operatives to the scene.

“On arrival, the team engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel.As a result of the swift and coordinated response of the Police team, nine (9) victims were successfully rescued. One (1) other male victim later escaped from captivity,” the statement read.

The police said three victims; one male and two females remain in captivity.

“The rescued victims were immediately evacuated to Doguwa General Hospital for medical evaluation. All are currently in stable condition and receiving treatment,” Kiyawa stated.

He added that the command had “intensified operational and manhunt efforts, including the deployment of additional tactical teams and sustained intelligence gathering, to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining captives and the arrest of the fleeing perpetrators.”
