Amupitan: INEC Won’t Compromise Integrity, Impartiality In Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting credible elections, saying his appointment to lead the nation’s electoral body is a “call to service.”

Amupitan stated this yesterday when he received a delegation of the Okun Development Association (ODA), led by its President-General, Amb. Akenson Rotimi, on a courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

The INEC chairman, who acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation in the digital age, said the commission would continue to discharge its constitutional mandate professionally and in accordance with the law.

He stressed that managing Nigeria’s electoral process required commitment, integrity and impartiality, assuring that INEC would remain focused on its responsibilities despite the challenges confronting the electoral system.

Amupitan expressed appreciation to the ODA delegation for the visit and for the support and prayers of the Okun community since his appointment as INEC chairman.

He explained that the demands of his office had prevented him from receiving the delegation earlier, adding that he had not been able to visit his hometown since assuming office due to the enormous responsibilities attached to leading the nation’s electoral body.

Describing his appointment as a “call to service,” the INEC chairman said he remained conscious of the expectations placed on him and the commission to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

He also thanked the Okun people for their prayers and encouragement, describing them as a source of strength as he carried out his national assignment.

Earlier, the ODA President-General, Amb. Rotimi congratulated Amupitan on his appointment, describing it as a recognition of his integrity, competence and distinguished record of service.

Rotimi said the appointment had brought pride to the Okun people, whom he described as a community known for producing men and women of character and excellence.

He commended Amupitan for accepting the responsibility of leading the nation’s electoral body and assured him of the continued prayers and support of the Okun community.

The ODA leader urged the INEC chairman to remain committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that the electoral process reflects the will of the people.
