Poor Stadium Maintenance Threatens Nigerian Football, Warns Ebi Egbe

Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Sports Facilities Construction Limited, Ebi Egbe, has warned that Nigeria’s poor stadium maintenance culture is putting the future of the country’s football infrastructure at risk, with many facilities rapidly falling below FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

Egbe said the persistent neglect of football pitches and sports facilities has left several stadiums in a state of disrepair, limiting their ability to host domestic and international competitions.

He stressed that maintenance is the cornerstone of sustainable sports infrastructure, arguing that even world-class facilities will deteriorate without a structured upkeep programme.

“Maintenance is the lubricant that keeps quality sports facilities functioning at their best. Once it is neglected, the entire development process of sport suffers a major setback,” Egbe said.

The sports infrastructure expert explained that regular maintenance is essential to preserving the quality, safety and lifespan of football pitches, ensuring consistent ball movement, reliable bounce, optimum player traction, effective shock absorption and improved player welfare.

According to him, no matter how advanced or expensive a playing surface may be, its quality will inevitably decline if maintenance is ignored.

He added that routine maintenance not only preserves FIFA performance standards but also extends the lifespan of pitches, reduces costly repairs and keeps facilities fit for elite competitions.

Egbe urged stadium managers, football administrators and government authorities to adopt maintenance as a long-term investment rather than an avoidable expense.

“In football, maintenance is not an expense; it is an investment in performance, player safety and sustainability. Protecting our sports facilities today is the only way to guarantee their value for future generations,” he said.

His warning comes amid mounting concerns over the deteriorating condition of stadiums across Nigeria, with several venues struggling to satisfy FIFA and CAF requirements for hosting league matches and international fixtures.
