The Rise of Bubble Tea In Abuja: Why Everyone Wants a Sip

Bubble tea is steadily gaining a following in Abuja as a growing number of speciality cafés introduce the Taiwanese drink to curious customers.

Just a few years ago, asking for bubble tea in Abuja would probably have earned you a puzzled look. Today, however, the colourful drink with its chewy tapioca pearls is gradually carving out a place in the capital’s growing café culture, attracting curious first-timers and loyal fans.

Originally created in Taiwan during the 1980s, bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is made by combining tea with milk or fruit flavours and topping it with tapioca pearls or other chewy toppings.

The reason many relish this tea is because of its adaptability. Customers can choose between creamy milk teas, refreshing fruit teas or flavoured iced drinks, then customise them with pearls, fruit popping boba or different sweetness levels. Aside from the taste, the drink’s colourful presentation has made it a favourite for social media users, who often share photos and videos of their orders.

Many cafés in Abuja are helping to introduce bubble tea to a wider audience. For example, Pink Bear Restaurant has made bubble tea one of its signature offerings alongside coffee, brunch and desserts, while The Bubble Tea Shop focuses almost entirely on premium bubble tea with a variety of milk and fruit tea options. Another growing favourite is Bubblin Tea Shop, where customers can choose from classic milk teas, fruit teas and signature creations.

Although bubble tea generally costs more than a regular soft drink, many enthusiasts say the experience is part of the attraction. Depending on the café and flavour, a serving typically costs between N3,500 and N6,000, placing it firmly in the category of an occasional treat rather than an everyday beverage.

As Abuja’s food and beverage scene continues to evolve, bubble tea reflects a broader willingness among residents to embrace international flavours and new café experiences. Whether the trend becomes a permanent fixture or simply remains a fashionable indulgence, one thing is clear: more people are discovering that tea can be much more than a hot drink served in a cup.

For adventurous food lovers looking to try something different this weekend, bubble tea may just be the next drink worth sipping.
