The United States government has released its official list of 100 civics questions and answers for foreign nationals seeking American citizenship through the naturalisation process.

The material, published by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), is designed to help applicants prepare for the civics component of the naturalisation test, which assesses their knowledge of American history, government, constitutional principles, rights and responsibilities, and national symbols.

Naturalisation is the legal process through which a person born outside a country voluntarily acquires citizenship after meeting requirements established by the government. Such requirements may include a specified period of residence and taking an oath of allegiance.

Introducing the 100 questions and answers, USCIS stated, “The 100 civics (history and government) questions and answers for the naturalisation test are listed below.”

The agency explained that the civics examination is conducted orally, with applicants required to answer up to 10 questions from the list.

“The civics test is an oral test, and the USCIS Officer will ask the applicant up to 10 of the 100 civics questions. An applicant must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly to pass the civics portion of the naturalization test,” USCIS said.

The agency, however, warned applicants that some answers could change following the election or appointment of public officials.

“As you study for the test, make sure that you know the most current answers to these questions. Answer these questions with the name of the official who is serving at the time of your eligibility interview with USCIS. The USCIS Officer will not accept an incorrect answer,” it stated.

USCIS also advised applicants to study the answers provided in its official material while preparing for the test, noting that although other responses may sometimes be acceptable, applicants should use the agency’s answers as a guide.
