MOAUM Gets Full NUC Accreditation For 5 Programmes

The Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), Prof. Timothy Terseer Alabar, has disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NU) fully accredited five academic programmes of the university.

Alabar said two programmes received interim accreditation.

Presenting his six-month scorecard on Monday at a news conference in Makurdi, Prof. Alabar, said B.Sc. Statistics, B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Science, B.Sc. Anatomy, B.Sc. Physiology and B.Sc. Biochemistry, while B.Sc. Radiography and Radiation Science secured full accreditation while B.Sc. Political Science received interim accreditation.

Alabar said the accreditation outcomes demonstrated the university’s commitment to maintaining academic standards and complying with regulatory requirements, noting that full accreditation was valid for five years, while interim accreditation lasts for two years.

Alabar, who assumed office on February 10, 2026, outlined achievements recorded under his administration in academic development, staff and students’ welfare, infrastructure, research and partnerships.

“Five of the programmes secured full accreditation status while two got interim accreditation,” Alabar said.

He also stated that the university had recruited essential academic staff for its College of Health Sciences to address manpower shortages and strengthen its capacity to meet the requirements of professional and regulatory bodies.

The vice-chancellor said the university’s first set of 57 Bachelor of Nursing graduates were inducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria on May 21, 2026.

He added that the university’s 12th set of medical doctors was inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria on June 30, while all outstanding examination results for the 2024/2025 academic session had been cleared and approved by Senate.

On staff welfare and career development, Alabar said the results of the 2025 promotion exercise had been released for 389 staff, comprising 313 non-teaching and 76 academic staff.

Alabar further said that professorial assessments for eligible academic staff had commenced, while the Technical and Science College Board, which had been inactive for some time, was reconstituted to facilitate the promotion process for deserving staff.

He also said the university is deploying a new portal to replace its existing platform, which has experienced instability, with the new system expected to improve online registration, admissions, fee payments, examination and results processing.

He said the university had also contracted the purchase and distribution of 63 laptops and 92 desktop computers to Deans and Heads of Departments to improve the processing of examinations and students’ results.

On students’ welfare, Alabar said the Student Union and Parliamentary elections for the 2025/2026 academic session were conducted through an online process in April, while a students’ welfare project was commissioned and a Braille laptop presented to a visually impaired student.

The vice-chancellor said the university’s participation in the National Universities Commission’s Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) programme, which he said would expose students and staff to digital skills, entrepreneurship, innovation, incubation and other opportunities.

He said the university’s participation in the programme would support the development of a Digital and Creative Enterprise Centre or Innovation Hub.

Alabar stated that MOAUM serves as a state collation centre for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB), describing the programme as an avenue for expanding access to university education and strengthening the institution’s academic visibility.

However, the Vice-Chancellor expressed concern over the July 7 killing of Prof. Gabriel Saawuan Nyityo of the Department of History by unknown gunmen, describing his death as a major loss to the department and the university.

He disclosed that five arrests had been made, with the suspects reportedly from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, based on briefs from security agencies.

Alabar said the university was following the investigation closely and would remain committed to ensuring that justice was served and similar killings prevented.

On his part, the university’s registrar, Barnabas Terna Hemba, appealed to journalists to verify allegations about the university, saying some negative reports in the past had been driven by the quest for engagement.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue State Council, Bemdoo Ugber, commended the university management for “measurable progress in academic development, research, infrastructure and community service.”

Ugber, however, said the media would continue to scrutinise claims by public institutions as part of its responsibility to promote transparency and accountability.
