Patience Ozokwor Reveals Why She Played Witches And Wicked Mothers-In-Law In Nollywood

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has opened up about the reason she became one of the industry’s most recognisable faces for villainous roles.

Speaking during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe on Monday, Ozokwor said she believes her long association with characters such as witches, wicked mothers-in-law and scheming antagonists was part of a purpose given to her by God.

“I think God gave me that niche,” she said.

Despite playing some of Nollywood’s most feared characters, the actress said she personally dislikes injustice, conflict and hatred.

“I hate every ill because I don’t like injustice, war, and rancour. When you give me those roles, I try to bring everything into them,” she explained.

Ozokwor said her performances were never simply about portraying evil for entertainment. Instead, she viewed the characters as a way of showing audiences the consequences of their actions and encouraging them to choose a better path.

She explained that viewers should understand what could happen when they embrace a destructive lifestyle and, equally, what they could gain from living well.

Her portrayal of intimidating mothers-in-law, witches and other antagonists became a defining feature of her career, particularly after she rose to prominence in the 1990s.
