The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has rescued two male occupants who were trapped in a petrol tanker accident at Toll-Gate on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway.

The Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Akinwande, disclosed this on Sunday in Ibadan, saying a distress call concerning the accident at Guru Maraji was received at exactly 8:38am.

According to him, the distress call was received through Mr. Nathaniel Oyelaran.

He said officers of the agency, led by CFS Adedeji, promptly mobilised to the scene.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a MAC trailer tanker with registration number BDJ 27IXG (OYO), loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had swerved off the road and plunged into a nearby ditch.

“Two male occupants were trapped in the accident. The fire crew immediately swung into action and successfully recovered the victims and blanketed the spilled content with foam chemical compound to prevent a likely fire incident,” he said.

Akinwande said the victims were subsequently handed over to a team of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers led by Comr. S. Oyegoke for further necessary action.

He added that preliminary information indicated that the accident was caused by brake failure.

The chairman urged members of the public, particularly motorists, to exercise extreme caution while driving, especially on highways, to prevent avoidable accidents.

He also stressed the importance of having functional fire extinguishers in all vehicles to enable motorists tackle fire outbreaks at their incipient stage.

He encouraged members of the public to report fire emergencies promptly and provide accurate locations by contacting the agency’s emergency lines.
