The Ondo State governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved a 60 per cent increase in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions in the state.

The governor also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the relevant state-owned tertiary institutions.

The two interventions, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, are aimed at strengthening the institutions and improving the welfare of workers in the state’s tertiary education sector.

Adeniyan said the increased subvention would enhance the capacity of the institutions to meet their financial obligations, ensure prompt payment of salaries and improve the overall learning environment for students and staff.

He added that the implementation of the Federal Government-ASUU agreement was designed to address long-standing welfare concerns, boost staff morale and bring the state-owned institutions in line with national standards.

“Both approvals take immediate effect from this month. The governor has also directed the managements of the affected institutions to ensure judicious use of the increased subvention, prioritising staff welfare and academic excellence,” the statement quoted Adeniyan as saying.

Aiyedatiwa urged the management of the institutions to ensure that the additional funds were properly utilised for the benefit of staff and students.

The governor also called on the unions to reciprocate the government’s gesture by maintaining industrial harmony and focusing on the delivery of quality education to students.

He said his administration remained committed to making Ondo State a hub for quality tertiary education, assuring that his government would continue to take bold steps to support the institutions and improve the standard of education in the state.
