Imo State University Alumni Association (IMSUAA) has called for robust national cohesion to guarantee unity in diversity, irrespective of tribe, religion, or race.

This call was made at the ninth National Convention and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association in Enugu, Enugu State.

Disclosing this to reporters, the National President of the association, Dr Charles Nwosu, said that the essence of Alumni all over the globe was to assist in the development of their alma mater and support members’ welfare.

He expressed delight that his administration had created a stronger Alumni presence, in which the association’s activities were no longer perceived as existing outside its alma mater. He expressed joy that they had created an organisation that would be formidable and visible within Imo State University.

Speaking also, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Barr. Okey Ozumba suggested that corporate organisations, well-spirited individuals, and members should always support Alumni Associations so they can meet their responsibilities.

According to Barr. Ozumba, the Board was working out modalities for establishing Trust Funds for the association, adding that, when realised, the initiative would trigger capacity building, individual growth, and the association’s stability.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor of Imo State University, Prof Uchefunna Ugonna Chukwumaeze, SAN, represented by Director, Alumni Affairs and Awards, Dr Okechukwu Akamike, advised leadership of the association to incorporate all graduates of the institution in their programmes, describing it as the only way to ensure stability and encourage peace and unity.

Dr Akamike, who served as Head of the Department of Economics, IMSU, further charged IMSUAA Leadership to remain amenable to the ongoing peace deal and reconciliation with other groups of the institution’s graduates, saying that the Vice Chancellor was doing everything possible to unite the association.

Earlier, the Guest Lecturer and former Nigerian High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador Anderson Madubuike, in his lecture titled “Knowledge, Culture and Nation Building: Harnessing Alumni Strength for Sustainable Growth”, described Alumni associations as platforms that determine the way forward for their members.

He maintained that conventions were not mere events to showcase class, wealth or affluence, but a forum where serious matters of concern aimed at creating networking, sustaining relationships, and building lasting business ideas were discussed.

Representing Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Calistus Ugwu expressed joy that the association chose Enugu as the host state for the 2026 convention and annual general meeting.

According to him, the government of Enugu State was concerned with building a conducive environment to attract over three million visitors per year, adding that, through this, the government and the people of Enugu State would boost their Internally Generated Revenue.

He revealed that while the government had put in place relevant infrastructure and improved security aimed at guaranteeing the safety of the citizens and visitors.
