BREAKING: Wike Orders Immediate Demolition Of Houses Blocking Abuja Waterways

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of houses obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas of Abuja.

Wike issued the directive on Tuesday after inspecting areas affected by flooding in Maitama.

He said the demolition would begin immediately and continue until Saturday, regardless of ongoing political activities or the status of the owners of the affected properties.

The FCT minister said structures obstructing waterways would be removed to address the causes of flooding and improve stormwater flow across the affected areas.

The directive came days after heavy rainfall caused flooding in parts of Abuja, leaving residents stranded and submerging vehicles.

Wike said the government would not allow political considerations or property owners’ identities to stand in the way of enforcing measures aimed at protecting lives and property.

The demolition exercise is expected to target buildings and other structures that obstruct natural waterways and drainage channels in Maitama and other flood-prone parts of the capital.
