Iran Rejects Trump’s ‘Crushing’ Economic Campaign, Warns Of Further US Defeat

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s latest economic pressure campaign against Tehran, describing it as a continuation of failed policies that would only deepen tensions between the two countries.

Araghchi made the remarks on Thursday in response to Trump’s announcement of what the US president described as an unprecedented economic campaign aimed at isolating Iran and punishing countries and institutions that maintain economic ties with Tehran.

“The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,” Araghchi said in a post on X.

He added that “doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat — and enmity of Iranians,” while accusing the United States of using economic measures to threaten the global economy and national sovereignty.

LEADERSHIP reports that Trump had in a post on Truth Social, announced what he called the “Most Crushing Economic Operation Ever Taken Against Any Country,” warning that the campaign would amount to “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”

The US president also threatened countries and organisations that continue to provide economic support to Iran.

“Any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face Tremendous Economic Consequences,” Trump said.

The latest escalation comes against the backdrop of the conflict between Iran and the United States, which erupted on February 28 following US-Israeli attacks that prompted Iranian retaliation across the region.

An April 8 ceasefire halted the most intense bombardment, but sporadic clashes have continued around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route that has emerged as a major flashpoint in the conflict.

The reopening of the strategic waterway has become a priority for Washington. Iran, however, has maintained that the strait will remain closed until the United States lifts its naval blockade of Iranian ports, removes oil sanctions and unfreezes Iranian assets held abroad.

Trump has for years pursued a policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran. He reinstated the sanctions regime after returning to office in January 2025, reviving an approach used during his first presidency.

Tehran has repeatedly rejected the sanctions campaign as ineffective, arguing that economic pressure and threats will not force Iran to alter its policies.
