Poor Planning Delays Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament, 483 Athletes Stranded In Abuja

The 5th Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Tournament in Abuja has been thrown into disarray after organisers failed to adequately address venue and logistical challenges, forcing a one-day postponement of the competition proper.

The championship, scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, could not get underway as planned, with the first competitive events now moved to Friday.

The delay has left 483 athletes from 18 states waiting in Abuja after organisers were unable to resolve issues surrounding the venue ahead of the scheduled opening.

Technical Director of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), Mr Dave Jegede, confirmed that the competition proper would now commence on Friday morning, while officials used Thursday to reorganise the programme.

“The competition was supposed to start today with individual kata elimination and finals, but we couldn’t due to logistics challenges,” Jegede said.

According to him, difficulties involving the Velodrome, which he said had recently been privatised, as well as electricity problems, contributed to the postponement.

“We have logistic issues with the venue, the Velodrome, which is now privatised. That was what caused the delay and issue of light. We adjusted our programme,” he added.

The setback raises questions over the organisers’ level of preparedness, particularly as the tournament dates and venue had been announced well in advance and athletes and officials had already travelled to Abuja.

Instead of commencing the competition as scheduled, organisers used Thursday for referees’ and coaches’ courses and examinations, alongside the athletes’ weigh-in and preparations for the draws.

“Referees and coaches’ courses and examinations have started and the athletes are doing their weigh-in, and the draw will be held any moment from now. The competition proper will start tomorrow morning,” Jegede said.

He explained that sending the athletes back home was not an option because the weigh-in process was ongoing and coaches needed to remain in Abuja for the draws.

“We can’t let the athletes go back home because of the delay because they are doing their weigh-in, and weigh-in is a continuous thing. The coaches will wait behind to do the draw,” he said.

The original programme had the competition scheduled to begin at 10:30am on Thursday, with cadet, junior and senior individual kata events for male and female athletes, including eliminations and finals.

Under the revised schedule, the competition will now begin on Friday and run through Saturday, August 22, while Sunday, August 23, has been set aside for the departure of delegates.

The tournament is particularly important to Nigerian karate as it will also serve as a qualifying event for athletes seeking selection for the African Karate Championship in Algeria.

With 483 athletes and 18 states participating, the scale of the championship makes the failure to resolve fundamental venue and logistical issues before the scheduled opening particularly concerning.

KFN officials will now be under pressure to ensure that the revised programme proceeds without further disruption and that athletes, coaches and officials who travelled to Abuja are not subjected to additional delays.
