Obi Urges Nigerian Youths To Channel Passion For European Football Into Nation-Building

The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian youths to channel their passion for European football into efforts to build a better Nigeria ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, made the call in a message to Nigerian youths on his X handle, where he linked the popularity of European football among Nigerian youths to the need for good governance and national development.

In a message titled “Beyond Football: The Match for a Better Nigeria,” Obi noted that millions of Nigerian youths would be following European football over the weekend, watching clubs compete while admiring the organisation, discipline and excellence associated with the leagues.

He asked why similar standards could not be achieved in Nigerian football, arguing that the country has no shortage of football talent.

According to him, Nigeria has produced world-class footballers who have excelled in Europe because they operated in systems that reward merit, invest in infrastructure, provide security and promote competent and accountable governance.

“Great football does not exist in isolation. It grows where there is good governance,” Obi said.

He argued that infrastructure and institutions supporting football—including stadiums, academies, transportation, healthcare, security and electricity—are products of deliberate leadership and citizens who demand accountability.

Obi said his planned engagement with Nigerian youths over the next 150 days would extend to town halls, campuses, online platforms and football communities.

He urged youths to recognise that the standards they admire in Europe can also be achieved in Nigeria, but stressed that achieving such transformation requires active participation in the electoral process.

“Imagine a Nigeria where our local league is competitive, our stadiums are full every weekend, our clubs attract sponsorship, our coaches receive proper training, and young footballers no longer see emigration as their only path to success,” he said.

The former Anambra governor further described the 2027 presidential election as an opportunity for Nigerian youths to determine the kind of country they want, urging them to see elections as being as important as the football matches they passionately follow.

He encouraged supporters of European clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and AC Milan to enjoy the games while also paying attention to Nigeria’s political future.

“When the final whistle blows, remember that the greatest match awaiting Nigerian youths is not in Europe. It is in Nigeria,” Obi said.

He identified good governance, jobs, security, education, sports development and national renewal as key areas in the “match” for a better Nigeria.

Obi concluded by urging Nigerian youths to “stand up, mobilise, vote and defend your vote,” saying that the future of Nigerian football and the country as a whole depends on the choices citizens make.

“If Nigerian youths can passionately follow European football every weekend, they can also passionately build a Nigeria where our own football—and our nation—becomes a source of pride,” he said.

He added that he would continue to remind Nigerian youths every weekend of the January 16, 2027 election and the possibility of creating “world-class standards” in Nigeria.
