LA28: Nigeria Make History With First-Ever Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualification

Nigeria have secured a historic place in the beach volleyball event at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, becoming the first Nigerian team to qualify for the event.

The landmark achievement was sealed on Saturday, 22 August, after Nigeria defeated Morocco 2-0 (21-17, 21-10) in the women’s final of the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship in Alexandria, Egypt.

The victory ended years of disappointment for Nigeria, who had reached the continental final on three previous occasions but finished runners-up each time.

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Musa Nimrod, described the qualification as a triumph for the entire country.

“I wish to congratulate Nigerians and thank God. This is the fourth time we are going into the finals; we finished in second place on three occasions,” Nimrod said.

“God has done it for us on our fourth trial and given us victory. It is not the Nigeria Volleyball Federation’s success alone but the entire nation.”

Nimrod also hailed the historic breakthrough after a 16-year wait for the federation.

“I want to say that after all these 16 years, today God has made it possible for the federation,” he added.

The Secretary-General of CAVB Zone 3 also commended the National Sports Commission and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, CGC Adewale Adeniyi, for their continued support and contribution to the development of volleyball in Nigeria.

The qualification represents a major milestone for Nigerian volleyball, with the country now set to make its historic Olympic debut in beach volleyball at LA28.
